First Annual Maintenance Mania a Huge Success
The Indiana State Fairgrounds was the place to be on March 27, 2007. A “record number” of 48 two-man maintenance teams - according to Mike Hendel with Home Depot Supply, the major sponsor - competed in seven timed events. Events included faucet installation, blind tool identification, light bulb replacement, disposal replacement, lockset change, smoke alarm replacement and the very popular derby race car competition. Before the competition began, four fantastic seminars kicked off the morning which included, IOSHA conducted by Johnny Trammel, Mold Remediation, conducted by Steve Ambro, ap/Home Inspections, Washer/Dryer Repair conducted by Sears Contract Sales, and Plumbing conducted by Hal Glenn with Roto Rooter. Around noon, the cheering section - made up of marketing directors, regional managers, managers, and leasing personnel - began arriving, pumped and ready to cheer their teams on to victory. “When our corporate staff entered, it was an ‘Oh, WOW’ moment,” according to Rich Shreve, Director of Service and Quality with AIMCO. “It was so well organized, and the energy and enthusiasm were awesome!” The day was hot and sultry outside, and the intense heat enveloped the inside as well. But the heat did not dampen the enthusiasm or competitive spirit of the participants. Not only were the teams serious, so were their supporters – the cheerleaders. Several companies came in matching t-shirts to support their teams, and at one point rival management companies bantered back and forth seeing who could cheer the loudest. The cheerleaders followed their team members to each competition, yelling and offering words of encouragement to their fellow employees. The timed events began with a rousing welcome from Mike Hendel. After a few general rules and explanations, the teams were off! Throughout the day, door prizes were given out, and “fun” games were taking place which included Red Neck Horseshoe sponsored by Flaherty & Collins, Duct Tape Bowling sponsored by Van Rooy Properties, Balance the Milk |
Crates, sponsored by CoinMach and Mainscape and Undo the Locks, sponsored by AIMCO and ACC Tech. Our very supportive associate members also sponsored table top displays for the attendees to visit. A huge thank you to: Frye Electric, Gold Seal Pest Control, H H Gregg, Moen, and Van Rooy Restoration. The afternoon concluded with the most intense event of the day – the derby race car competition. Imagine 48 cars barreling down an 11 foot track two at time to see if they could make it to the finish line. The cheering from the crowd was so loud, it was hard to hear the person next to you. Several cars had mechanical problems but the teams rallied fixing their cars with duct tape or glue or whatever they could find to put their car back together. The winners of the car race received a rousing rendition of Jim Nabors singing “Back Home Again in Indiana”, a wreath of roses and a bottle of milk to quench their thirst and savor their victory…all reminiscent of the Indy 500! Not every team could win…some teams had to leave defeated. But there were no losers on March 27th! Management companies rallied together, maintenance staff members worked together as one and showed they are truly winners of the apartment industry and the Indiana Apartment Association. Congratulations to Van Rooy Properties, Edward Rose Companies and AIMCO, whose personnel won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place respectively. These three top teams may be eligible to compete at the National Apartment Association’s Annual Convention in Las Vegas, June 28th. What an event! Mike Hendel with Home Depot Supply said, “Indiana’s Maintenance Mania Event had one of the largest turnouts and is one other associations want to aspire to. The enthusiasm and the variety of events were great. It was a well thought-out event and one that kept the crowd engaged. The volunteers worked extremely well together and it was a delight for HDS to work with them.” He concluded his remarks by stating, “Indiana ROCKS!” Not only does Indiana Rock, but the maintenance teams and their supportive management companies are the ones who truly “Rock.” |
